Membership

Associate Membership

Associate Members are staff members from State Fire Marshal offices, who have been appointed by the State Fire Marshal to assist with NASFM issues. Associate Members are non-voting members.

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate Members are former State Fire Marshals involved in a fire protection-related activity. Affiliate Members are non-voting members.

Principal Members

NASFM Principal Members are the most senior fire officials of the United States. These members are the ultimate authorities in the organization. Principal members meet annually, elect a Board of Directors and officers and are consulted whenever possible on crucial matters. The responsibilities of State Fire Marshals and other senior fire officials vary from state to state, but tend to include fire safety code adoption and enforcement, fire and arson investigation, fire incident data reporting and analysis, public education and education of Governors and State Legislatures on fire protection. Some State Fire Marshals are responsible for fire fighter training, hazardous materials incident responses, wildland fires and the regulation of natural gas and other pipelines.

Life Membership

Lifetime Members must be principal NASFM members in good standing, whose nomination for the honor is made by another principal member and accepted by the NASFM Board of Directors at least 30 days before the Annual Conference. A Lifetime candidate must have held an office, chaired or participated on a NASFM committee or assisted in projects or activities for the good of the organization. Annual conference registration fees are waived for a Lifetime Member. Lifetime Members are non-voting members.

Advocate Membership

There are many opportunities for the private sector to work with the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) to seek higher levels of fire safety.

If you share our determination to achieve a safer America, we invite you to join our organization. Here are four options:

Option A: President's Council (Sustaining Advocate Member)

Membership by invitation from the NASFM Board for individuals representing research and academic institutions, corporations and other organizations with a demonstrated commitment to fire safety.

Privileges of Membership

  1. Subject to Board action, President's Council Members are eligible:

    • To serve as advisory members of NASFM Task Forces and Committees.
    • To propose and participate in NASFM's Combustion Testing and Research Consortium. This initiative allows President's Council Members to join NASFM in cooperatively defining, conducting and evaluating combustion tests of products and materials; to conduct fire protection research; and to share costs.
    • For their websites containing safety-related information to be linked to the NASFM website. (Note: Websites must include technical information and guidance of importance to the fire safety community. NASFM will not link to websites that include the promotion of products or services.)
    • To propose subjects for and participate in annual meeting Partnership Roundtables. Partnership Roundtables permit President's Council Members to meet directly with State Fire Marshals to discuss issues of mutual concern. These sessions will be conducted at future NASFM annual meetings.
  2. Free booth space at NASFM annual meetings.

  3. One free registration and two registrations at 50 percent discount for annual meetings.

  4. Copies of all NASFM bulletins and reports.

President's Council Members are requested to make an annual contribution of at least $7,500 to help support NASFM's activities.

Option B: Corporate Advocate Members

Open membership, subject to the approval of the NASFM Board, for research and academic institutions and individual corporations with a demonstrated commitment to fire safety.

Privileges of Membership

  1. Advocate Members are eligible to receive:

    • Booth space at discounted rates at NASFM annual meetings, as available.
    • Discounted registration for annual meetings.
    • Copies of all NASFM bulletins and reports.
  2. Subject to Committee Chairs' decision, observer status at NASFM Task Force and Committee meetings.

For trade associations and societies, all requirements and privileges are the same as Advocate Corporate Members, except that the annual dues are $5,000.
